WebIonization (or ionisation) is the process by which an atom or a molecule acquires a negative or positive charge by gaining or losing electrons, often in conjunction with other chemical changes. The resulting electrically charged atom or molecule is called an ion. WebAtoms are ionised when electrons are removed and this makes them charged and more likely to take part in chemical reactions. If these atoms are ones inside cells of the body, ionising radiation can damage or kill them. If the DNA in a cell is damaged it may mutate.
